Probably due to seasons. Specifically I'm guessing it's due to long periods of sunlight deprivation, which interferes with sleep/wake cycles etc.

Yeah, that is what I was alluding to. Coffee has significant hormone impact, and it might be helpful in the absence of usual sunlight on circadian rhythms.
