This is one of the design mistakes I made. I think connection type should be zcf by default. Unfortunately short links <1234567> default to category link type (z:). I'm tempted to change it to default to zcf (when working on the new link style feature).
I think the new link style discussed in #59 (comment) should default to ordinary connections (formerly zcf), with category tree-type links specified explicitly by a query flag. For example, <123...
