I mean, I would actually like to get rid of Slack - for practical reasons:
it's mobile app is extremely buggy on my device - I have to restart it every few minutes - Zulip one is not that pretty but it just works
it's authors must hate markdown for some reason - they have removed all the good features and force their graphical editor upon us which often has wrong assumptions about what I'm trying to write - Zulip simply has that markdown
it forces me to use their call feature, because that's what people click on when using it - but I must have their desktop app installed to use it, even though it's just another browser, without top bar - Zulip just uses Jitsi, which works everywhere easily
topics are much, much more easier to follow in lengthy discussions on Zulip - regularly I have to give up on catching up with discussions on Slack simply because there's bunch of them interspersed in like 150+ comments - in Zulip I can completely ignore some or just like read them one by one
and then the plan - Zulip literally gave us paid plan for free as sort of FOSS support, but we are still rather using free plan on Slack without history and with limited functionality
oh, and discussions on Zulip can span more than few days - on Slack, I don't really see people linking older discussions to continue that often, but on Zulip, people seem to regularly revisit older topics as in forums, even though we're talking about real-time communication
It really sucks that programmers are reluctant to move out of Slack. Zulip is open source, and they generously gave us a paid plan. What did Slack do? Slack is meant for businesses, not open source communities.
Doing quick calculation, with current amount of users, Slack instance with amount of people we have here would cost us 3835.25$ per month (ignoring the fact that FP Slack has over 13K of mostly inactive users) - so you can see why having it somewhere for free is actually a great advantage
I've always hated slack and been a discord fan myself, but I just looked into this and wow, it's awesome. I love the thread model and the formatting options are awesome! not to mention it's open source!
If the goal to to eventually get everyone on here, for those of you that still use Slack, maybe we should add something like "(On Zulip)" to our slack names, to increase the visibility.
@Torsten Schmits I'd use this channel more often but I turned on 2-factor on my Github and have to fill it in every time I come here, which is annoying. Nothing to do with Zulip, just me shooting myself in the foot
Or will we attract their ire? :-D

is there actually an ideological conflict with the slack community?

Probably that they, well, use Slack
Familiarity does a lot in software...
i think they see it as us "adversing" zulip, so as to lure people away from slack
I meant, are there active flame wars or something
Nope. Just them telling us "don't do this here guys" or some such thing. can't find the link, because Slack's free plan
I mean, I would actually like to get rid of Slack - for practical reasons:
yeah, I have no doubts about Slack being bad

what do you think is the reason for them not to move to Zulip? aside from just habit
I'd think inertia due to familiarity with Slack in their workplace.
Moving to a new platform it's always an issue
I can also add that this UI is even worse than slack's imho :D
I find it pretty neat
It takes some getting used to.
does that mean someone here is paying out of their pocket for this chat?
it sounds to me as if they provide a paid plan for free
there was a period of time where some folks were posting about zulip like all the time
the occasional post is fine...

No, Zulip has gave us paid plan for free simply because we're open community (specifically, it was it's CEO that responded to me  )
I did setup this instance nearly a year ago and asked them about https://www.zulipchat.com/for/open-source/ somewhere at the start of this year

element, jitsi, zulip. the trifecta

I've added
:zulip:
emoji on Slack that you can use in your statusTeam Zulip!

I have 2fa on my github and that never happens to me
does zulip log you out after such a short time? I have it always open so I can't tell
also, I have 2FA active
or are you an extra-high security freak who uses a delete-my-cookie addon?
i should probably just whitelist github
that sounds like a reasonable course of action
