well I for one have had issues with matrix over the years, specifically with it being buggy, slow, and there not being any discussion groups on there that aren;'t actually significantly more populated elsewhere
The main reason I like Matrix is that it bridges to IRC, so I can chat on freenode channels like #nixos or #haskell or #reflex-frp from the same Matrix app: image.png

I'll try it again but idk I could never make using it stick
It works well on Chromium for me.
The only issue I've had with Matrix (I use Element) is that I could never get verification to work, but that doesn't make it nonfunctional.

The IRC bridge has been working quite reliably; so that alone tells me that Matrix has a good future.
My reason to think they're here to stay is that several governments entities have adopted it
